A MAN was fatally wounded by a homemade shotgun while hunting with friends in the Tebu Hitam forest near Kuantan last Sunday, police have confirmed.

Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the incident occurred when the weapon suddenly discharged, injuring the victim’s finger before the shot penetrated his right chest.

The victim, who had ventured into the forest with six friends, was later found lying motionless by one of them around 3pm on the day of the incident, who then lodged a police report.

“A post-mortem conducted at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan found the cause of death to be chest injuries caused by the gunshot. The case has been classified as sudden death,” Yahaya said.

Following the incident, police detained all six men aged between 35 and 67, including one Orang Asli individual, for further investigation.

Officers also seized five homemade shotguns, one Benelli Armi-Urbino shotgun, and 25 rounds of buckshot ammunition.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960, which governs the unlawful possession of weapons.

“Police will not compromise and will take firm action against anyone found in possession of homemade or unlicensed firearms,” Yahaya said, urging those who own such weapons to surrender them to authorities to avoid prosecution. - May 6, 2025
