THE newly appointed Director-General of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, has expressed confidence that the agency will continue to play a vital role in securing the nation’s borders.
Mohd Shuhaily, who began his duties today, said his focus would be on ensuring that AKPS personnel are visibly active on the ground and that their presence is felt by the public.
“InsyaAllah… it is our duty to ensure that AKPS can be seen physically in the near future, and that our impact is felt by the public as envisioned by the government,” he said.
He takes over the post from Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali, who retired in February. The position had remained vacant for five months until Mohd Shuhaily’s appointment was announced by Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Acknowledging the limited duration of his contract, Mohd Shuhaily emphasised a results-driven approach to his two-year tenure.
“My contract is only for two years, and if broken down into quarters, I only have eight quarters to deliver on what has been entrusted to me,” he said.
The 53-year-old arrived at his office at 9.15 am, where he was welcomed by AKPS Deputy Director-General (Operations) Mohd Jasmi Mohd Juwahir and Deputy Director-General (Management) Ismail Mokhtar. He later attended a closed-door briefing with senior officers and agency staff.
Mohd Shuhaily holds a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and a Master’s in Strategic Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
He brings with him 26 years of experience with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), including a diplomatic posting as Police Attaché in Washington, D.C., from 2010 to 2013.
His most recent role was as Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ), a post he assumed on 15 August 2023. - July 1, 2025
