MALAYSIA is showcasing its commitment to inclusive and sustainable digital development at the World Summit on the Information Society +20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), taking place in Geneva from 7 to 11 July 2025.
Led by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, the Malaysian delegation is participating in the summit as part of ongoing national efforts to strengthen the country’s communications technology ecosystem in line with the Malaysia MADANI vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This participation brings a range of strategic benefits, including international recognition of Malaysia’s leadership in expanding rural internet access, advancing digital inclusion, and empowering citizens through ICT literacy in line with Malaysia MADANI’s values of wellbeing and shared prosperity,” the Ministry of Communications said in a statement on Sunday.
At the forum, Malaysia is promoting flagship initiatives such as the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) plan and the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI), which aim to enhance connectivity and public access to verified information. These efforts underline the country’s position as a regional leader in digital transformation.
Organised by the United Nations, WSIS provides a global platform to promote the use of information and communications technology (ICT) for sustainable development. Its framework includes 11 WSIS Action Lines focusing on areas such as infrastructure, capacity building, cybersecurity, and policy support.
A key feature of the summit is the WSIS Prizes, which recognise impactful ICT-based development projects. Since the awards were introduced in 2012, 234 winners and 648 champions have been recognised globally.
Fahmi is also expected to hold over 10 bilateral meetings during the summit with his counterparts from the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Somalia, Greece, Russia, and Algeria. In addition, he will meet with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin to discuss collaborative opportunities in global digital policy. - July 6 2025
