THE Selangor State Legislative Assembly has rejected a petition tabled by opposition lawmakers regarding the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights on 1 April, saying the matter will instead be addressed in a special briefing by the Chief Minister later today.
Speaker Lau Weng San confirmed that Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari will provide a full explanation to all assembly members in a session scheduled for 4.30pm.
“There will be a debate involving the Putra Heights incident,” said Weng San during the 15th sitting of the Selangor State Assembly at Wisma Dewan Negeri Selangor. “As I mentioned, there will be a briefing by the Chief Minister this afternoon.
“After that, the assembly will reconvene, and all members will take part in the debate. The government will provide clarification on all matters raised.”
Earlier in the day, Taman Medan assemblyman Afif Bahardin presented the petition on behalf of approximately 20 residents affected by the incident.
The petition called for an open debate in the assembly on the gas explosion and requested the tabling of a full report from all agencies involved in managing the aftermath of the blast.
While the Speaker did not object to the matter being debated, he ruled that it should follow the Chief Minister’s briefing to ensure that all members are informed before entering deliberations.
Opposition members argued that the issue should have taken precedence in the morning session, ahead of scheduled questions to the Chief Minister, due to its importance to public safety and interest. - July 7, 2025
