A NEWBORN baby boy was discovered alive by the roadside in Taman Cempaka Indah, Bukit Selambau, early yesterday morning, prompting police to detain a 17-year-old secondary school student to assist investigations.
The incident came to light around 9am when members of the public heard the baby crying. Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan, said a call was received at the Bukit Selambau Police Station complaint desk alerting them to the discovery.
“The baby was found unclothed and placed directly on the rocky ground,” he said in a statement issued today.
He added that the first witness had been hanging laundry behind her house when she heard loud crying and began searching the area.
“The witness screamed upon seeing a baby boy on the roadside, and neighbours came out to help move the infant to a safer location,” Hanyan said.
The baby was subsequently taken to the Emergency Unit at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) for medical examination. Doctors confirmed the baby was in stable condition, with minor scratches on his right eye and the right side of his body.
“Further investigations led to the discovery of blood stains at the scene,” Hanyan said.
This development led police to arrest a 17-year-old male student believed to be linked to the incident. He is currently under a two-day remand.
Hanyan also revealed that police intend to detain a 19-year-old woman, believed to be the baby’s mother, who is currently receiving postnatal care in hospital.
