WHAT was supposed to be a day filled with joy turned to sorrow when a groom in Penang died – just eight hours before his wedding.
Mohamad Faiz Md Rozi, 34, died at his family home in Sungai Dua, Butterworth, leaving his 32-year-old fiancé, Nor Izzati devastated.
She and Mohamad Faiz were supposed to be married on December 19 at the Islamic religious office at 10 am.
Even more tragic, Mohamad Faiz, who previously worked as an electrical technician in a factory, not only died on his wedding day but a day after celebrating his birthday.
Sharing the story, Nor Izzati said she was shocked when she received a call from Mohamad Faiz's sister who informed her that her fiancé had died, believed to have been sleeping, at 2am.
"Before going to bed, we had a WhatsApp conversation at 11pm and I reminded him (the late Mohamad Faiz) to go to bed early.
"The deceased told her that he had just finished ironing his clothes and I managed to remind him not to be tight-lipped on the wedding day because the pictures would not be pretty.
"He replied that he would smile during the photo shoot before saying good night. Three hours later, I woke up after receiving a call from the fiancé's sister saying that the deceased was gone.
"At that time, I was shocked and immediately called my mother and father before we went to the fiancé's house in Sungai Dua," she said.
Upon arriving at her fiancé's house, Nor Izzati saw that Mohamad Faiz's body was already in an ambulance to be taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Nor Izzati said she also managed to meet her fiancé's parents to find out more about what happened.
"As far as I know, the deceased had no health problems, only complained of headaches. According to his mother, she had a chat with the deceased before going to bed.
"Around 1.30am, the deceased's mother entered his room and found that Mohamad Faiz had passed away.
"It's sad because my fiancé left without leaving a message and we had promised to meet on the wedding day but it was different when we couldn't get married and instead I accompanied his body to the cemetery," she said, who met her fiancé at the end of 2019 before losing touch for four years and reconnecting last Ramadan.
According to Nor Izzati, the last time she met Mohamad Faiz was on December 5 to discuss marriage matters in addition to accompanying the man to get a haircut.
"The deceased had kept his hair long for a long time but I wanted him to have short hair and he went with me.
"When I was at the barber shop, the deceased kept staring at me until I was embarrassed and he was also his wearing wedding shoes on that day.
"I scolded him and asked why he was wearing them, the deceased said he wanted to try them on first because he was excited," she said.
According to her, she has created too many memories with Mohamad Faiz and described her fiancé as a good, kind man.
"After sharing it on social media, thousands of people prayed for him even though they did not know him and the reason for his death, many also prayed for me and came to visit.
"I don't know if I will ever meet a man like him who loves me, is afraid of losing me and treats me like a princess," she said, who was also upset because she did not have time to prepare lontong, her fiancé's favorite food on their wedding day. – December 23, 2025
