MIC remains a core party in Barisan Nasional (BN), though it was previously reported that there was an application letter from them to join Perikatan Nasional (PN).
UMNO President, who is also BN Chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said MIC leaders themselves had denied that they had applied to join the opposition bloc.
"So far, they are members of BN. They have not stated that they are officially leaving BN.
"Although there is a letter that has been sent to the Perikatan Nasional (PN), on the contrary, they have denied that they have ever applied to join the party," he said.
He said this when opening the 46th KIMMA general meeting at the World Trade Centre (WTC) in Kuala Lumpur today.
Also present were the President of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (KIMMA), Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Kader and BN Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
MIC Deputy President, Datuk Seri M Saravanan, last month announced that the party had decided to remain with BN for the time being following the change in leadership in PN.
He said that when the decision to explore the potential for cooperation with PN was made during the party's Annual General Meeting (AGM) last year, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was still the PN Chairman.
Earlier, in his speech at the event, Ahmad Zahid reminded his BN component partners not to betray and to prioritise the spirit of camaraderie.
Without referring to any of his component parties, Ahmad Zahid said loyalty should be translated into sincerity, not by saying one thing in front of others and another behind their backs.
Elaborating further, Ahmad Zahid said that wisdom in making decisions is a priority for him, UMNO and BN.
"What is the meaning of sincerity if there is treachery in the heart? I may not be very smart, but wisdom in making decisions is a priority for me, UMNO and BN," he said. – April 18, 2026
