A PREGNANT woman was allegedly subjected to public humiliation after being accused of shoplifting at a supermarket in Selayang, with her husband claiming staff demanded proof of her pregnancy before clearing her of any wrongdoing.

The woman's husband, who identified himself only as Fareez, 25, said the incident occurred at about 5.30pm on Saturday after the couple had completed their shopping and were preparing to pay at the checkout.

Fareez alleged that three supermarket employees approached them, with one male staff member accusing his 23-year-old wife of concealing merchandise beneath her clothing.

"I was upset because they made the accusation in a rather harsh manner even though it was completely untrue.

"I told them my wife was pregnant and had not hidden any items, but they did not believe us. They asked us to prove it by showing her maternity record book or revealing her stomach," he said.

Fareez claimed he demanded that the employees summon their supervisor and identify the staff member who had allegedly witnessed the supposed theft.

He said the couple waited about 20 minutes for the supervisor to arrive, during which his pregnant wife was allegedly made to remain standing before eventually being offered a chair.

According to Fareez, the female employee later admitted that she had become suspicious because his wife's abdomen "did not look like a pregnancy" and believed she was concealing stolen goods instead.

"My wife was traumatised and burst into tears. I asked them to apologise, but the apology did not appear sincere," he said, adding that they left the supermarket shortly afterwards out of concern for his wife's emotional well-being.

The incident has since gone viral on social media, prompting widespread public reaction.

The supermarket has yet to issue an official response, and local media are seeking clarification over the allegations. - July 12, 2026
