PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed calls from opposition lawmakers for a snap general election, urging political rivals to allow the government to focus on delivering its commitments under the mandate secured from voters.
Speaking during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday, Anwar said Malaysians were more concerned about stability and economic progress than prolonged political competition.
"I believe the people also want stability. The people want the economy to grow, and they do not want us to only engage in politics all the time," Anwar said.
The Prime Minister also cautioned opposition parties against becoming overly confident about their political standing, saying the government should be allowed sufficient time to carry out its responsibilities before the next election.
"So, give it time. Do not be overconfident. I also do not want to be too confident — and I hope Hulu Terengganu, too, will not be too confident," he said.
The remarks came in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Rosol Wahid, (PN - Hulu Terengganu), who asked whether the government was considering dissolving Parliament and returning the mandate to the people amid concerns over economic conditions, domestic stability and regional geopolitical risks, including tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Anwar said the government continued to listen to public concerns but maintained that the priority among Malaysians was economic strengthening and political certainty.
"Regarding listening to the people’s voices, we listen to the people’s voices. I believe the people also want stability. The people also want the economy to grow," he said.
"People also want us not to be involved in politics all the time. So, again, give us time. We have a mandate, and when the election comes, we will compete again."
Anwar stressed that political competition should take place during election periods rather than becoming a constant distraction that could undermine government efforts to manage the economy and national priorities.
He said the administration would continue focusing on strengthening Malaysia’s economic foundations, maintaining stability and implementing its development agenda until the conclusion of its current parliamentary mandate. - July 14, 2026
