A 42-YEAR-OLD man pleaded not guilty in the Magistrates' Courtin Kajang on Friday to three charges of driving under the influence of methamphetamine and causing the deaths of three members of the same family in a crash in Hulu Langat on Wednesday.
Mohd Norazlan Mohd Tamyiz entered the pleas after the charges were read before Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil.
Under the first to third charges, the father of two was accused of driving a Perodua Aruz while under the influence of the dangerous drug methamphetamine, resulting in the deaths of Hafifi Rahmat, 34; his wife, Nik Aishah Asilah Nik Mohd Zamzuri, 32; and their three-year-old son, Muhammad Rafie Hanzal Hafifi.
The alleged offence took place at Jalan Batu 17, Hulu Langat, at about 7.56am on July 29.
He was charged under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of between 10 and 15 years and a fine of between RM50,000 and RM100,000 upon conviction.
The provision also carries a mandatory disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a minimum of 10 years from the date of conviction, or 20 years for a second or subsequent conviction, under Section 44(3) of the Act.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Farhanim Abdul Halim did not offer bail.
Counsel S Priyalatha, representing Mohd Norazlan, appealed for minimum bail, telling the court that the accused supported his wife, two children and elderly parents.
“The accused works as a village labourer, earns RM1,000 a month and is the family's sole breadwinner,” she said.
The court granted bail at RM10,000 for all three charges with one surety and ordered the accused to report to a police station on the first day of every month.
The case has been fixed for mention on Sept 18 for the submission of documents and the pathology report.
The crash occurred on July 29 when the motorcycle carrying the family was involved in a collision with a sport utility vehicle (SUV) at Jalan Batu 17, Hulu Langat.
Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof previously said preliminary investigations indicated that the Perodua Aruz allegedly entered the victims' lane before the collision occurred.
All three victims were thrown from the motorcycle and were pronounced dead at the scene. - July 31, 2026
