SELANGOR Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has urged all parties to avoid making selective accusations over the state’s handling of stray dogs, saying the government remains committed to safeguarding public safety while protecting animal welfare.
Amirudin said authorities would continue acting against stray dogs, but stressed that any measures must be carried out in the interest of the wider community.
"We will continue to take action against stray dogs, but the state government must act in the interest of the public good," he said.
He said concerns over public safety had also been raised by elected representatives, including the Pelabuhan Klang assemblyman, but questioned why criticism was being directed at certain parties.
"The Pelabuhan Klang assemblyman also raised the issue of public safety, but why are accusations being made by certain parties against outsiders?" he said.
Amirudin said the authorities must find a balance between preventing incidents involving stray animals and ensuring humane treatment.
"That is why I mentioned the point of balance. The point of balance is that we need to take action and prevent incidents involving roaming dogs that could affect safety.
"So, do not be selective in making accusations regarding this issue," he said.
He was speaking after attending a gathering of civil servants with the Selangor Menteri Besar at the Jubli Perak Auditorium, Selangor State Secretariat (SUK), today.
Amirudin said the matter had also been raised by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, who stressed that individuals who mistreat animals must face legal action.
"Do not be angry if there are people who are concerned about animal welfare, because we also care about human welfare," he said.
The issue drew public attention after a stray dog-catching operation by the Royal Klang City Council (MBDK) at Taman Teluk Gedung Indah late last month went viral following a commotion when a dog died during the operation.
Police are currently investigating the incident. - August 3, 2026
