A HOUSEWIFE was charged in the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday with murdering a 16-month-old baby girl late last month.
The accused, Nurul Farhana Laili Shah, 39, understood after the charge was read out before Judge Hafizah Abdul Rajak.
However, no plea was recorded because the Section 302 case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge, she killed Nur Anggun Dahlia Abdullah, 16 months old, between 12.30 pm on July 30 and 9.30 am on July 31 in Taman Sri Saujana, Kota Tinggi.
The charge was brought under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for not more than 40 years.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Nor Afiqah Musa, while the accused was represented by lawyer, Lydiana Mansor.
December 11 is set for the mention of the case pending chemical and post-mortem reports.
It was earlier reported that a one-year-old four-month-old baby girl died, believed to have been the victim of abuse and murder by her step-grandmother, who had cared for her since birth in Taman Sri Saujana, Kota Tinggi, on July 31.
The 18-year-old mother of the illegitimate baby left the unfortunate child with the woman, as she was still studying at a vocational college in the state.
Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said a report was received from the 39-year-old step-grandmother on July 31 at 9.30 am, who claimed the baby was unconscious when she tried to wake it up.
However, the autopsy results confirmed that the victim suffered blunt force trauma to the chest and abdomen, as there were bruises on the baby.
Acting on the report, three individuals were arrested, including the victim's mother, step-grandmother and grandfather, but two of them were released to be prosecution witnesses. – August 12, 2026
