JOHOR police have opened three investigation papers into separate incidents involving the Johor state flag and Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down, with five people arrested to assist investigations.
Johor Deputy Police Chief Datuk Seri Hoo Chuan Huat said investigators were completing the three investigation papers before referring them to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further instructions.
The cases are being investigated under the jurisdictions of the Kulai, Iskandar Puteri and Johor Bahru Selatan district police headquarters.
“So far, we have three cases and police have opened investigations into all three. Arrests have been made and investigations are still ongoing.
“Once the investigation papers are completed, we will refer them to the AGC (Attorney General’s Chambers) to obtain a decision (on prosecution),” he told a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters today.
Hoo said five individuals had been detained in connection with the three cases.
The Kulai investigation involved the arrest of a 34-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman, while Johor Bahru Selatan police detained two men aged 25 and 43.
Iskandar Puteri police, meanwhile, detained a 56-year-old man.
All five were employees of the premises involved in the respective incidents.
Hoo also urged business owners, premises supervisors and individuals responsible for displaying flags to ensure proper supervision after installation.
“Supervision must be carried out. What we see in these flag installation issues is usually that the work is done by foreign workers. Foreign workers, they do not know.
“As the owner or person responsible for installing the flag, they should show them the correct way to install it and, after installation, at least carry out supervision, such as taking a photograph and sending it to the supervisor responsible to check whether it is correct or incorrect,” he said.
The investigations follow a series of incidents that have sparked public attention in Johor over the improper display of the state and national flags.
Earlier, a factory in the Indahpura Industrial Area in Kulai was ordered to close temporarily after an incident involving the Johor flag and Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down went viral.
A Nepalese security guard and a local woman from the premises were arrested and remanded for four days until Friday to assist investigations.
Separately, Kota Iskandar assemblyman Datuk Pandak Ahmad recently disclosed another case involving the Johor flag and Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down at the SILC Industrial Area in Gelang Patah, Iskandar Puteri.
The latest investigations have placed renewed focus on the responsibility of premises owners and supervisors to ensure Malaysia’s national flag and state symbols are displayed correctly. - August 20, 2026
