THE Government has rejected the airing of ‘Madu atau Racun’ following controversy over content deemed contrary to Islamic teachings and Eastern cultural values, with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) now working with relevant agencies to review the material.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the review would be carried out in accordance with the Guidelines for the Screening of Islamic Content in Broadcast Materials, with appropriate action to be taken where necessary.
He said the measures were intended to ensure dramas and other broadcast materials did not conflict with Islamic principles and morality, while safeguarding the sanctity of the religion.
“We stress that the principles of Islamic teachings always place priority on preserving the sanctity of the family institution and the etiquette of religious life, while portrayals of lifestyles deemed deviant are entirely contrary to these noble values.
“Therefore, the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) rejects the airing of the drama Madu atau Racun, which has caused concern and controversy among members of the public.
“We deeply regret the inclusion of elements that touch on religious sensitivities and local cultural norms, whether explicitly or implicitly.
“The incorporation of elements contrary to Islamic teachings and Eastern cultural values must be curbed to ensure that the faith and moral values of society, particularly among the younger generation, remain protected,” he said in a statement today.
The drama has drawn mixed reactions on social media for featuring the character Nikita, who is attracted to the same sex and attempts to save her lover, Azura, from becoming a victim of domestic violence.
Zulkifli reiterated that the authorities viewed the inclusion of elements touching on religious sensitivities and local cultural norms, whether explicitly or implicitly, with concern.
He urged artists, producers and broadcasters to exercise greater responsibility and use official guidelines as their primary reference when producing content.
He said creative works should contribute towards educating audiences, nurturing positive values and strengthening the character of society.
“The arts industry and media platforms should be utilised as mediums for nurturing positive values, rather than sparking controversies that undermine the harmony of societal norms.
“To all Muslims, let us work together to safeguard the sanctity of religion and morality with devotion and wisdom,” he said. - September 2, 2026
