PAS has stepped up its challenge to the Unity Government, calling for Parliament to be dissolved and a fresh mandate sought as it accuses coalition partners of openly attacking one another and says the political situation has become increasingly difficult to control.

PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the growing friction within the Unity Government was now being played out publicly, making a fresh election necessary to restore political stability.

“It is no longer a secret as the matter can be seen openly and clearly through various statements made. Usually, such matters within a party would not be brought out into the open, but because the situation has become serious and cannot be controlled, they are attacking each other.

“My view is simple: for stability, just dissolve Parliament. Give the mandate to the people and let the people make a new choice.

“The recent decision was not for the people to choose one party, but only a coalition. In fact, in the last general election, no single party was able to form the government on its own,” he said after attending the PAS Central 75th Diamond Jubilee Celebration Ceramah in Kota Bharu late last night.

Tuan Ibrahim, who is also Kubang Kerian MP, also took aim at PKR over calls for UMNO to clarify whether it would remain in the Unity Government or move towards Perikatan Nasional (PN).

“PKR needs to know its place because the number of seats held by UMNO is larger than that party. How many seats does it have? UMNO is bigger than it and PKR should not act that way. PKR needs to know its place; it is riding on UMNO and UMNO’s strength. Therefore, in a political understanding, we should respect each other.

“That is why I think UMNO is very uncomfortable with the actions taken by its component partners, including PKR, DAP and others,” he said.

His remarks followed a call by PKR Youth deputy chief Nabil Halimi for UMNO to state clearly whether GE16 should be held earlier to secure a fresh mandate.

The call came amid reports that Barisan Nasional chairman and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi favoured holding GE16 before the end of Parliament’s full term, which is scheduled to expire late next year.

PAS’ call for a fresh election came as its 72nd Muktamar unanimously approved a motion on ummah unity, signalling the party’s intention to consolidate political cooperation ahead of GE16 around shared Malay and Islamic interests.

The motion, tabled by PAS Ulama Council representative Zulqarnain Hassan and supported by PAS Pahang delegate Nasaruddin Hassan, was approved after debate.

Nasaruddin urged PAS members and supporters to prevent efforts by “troublemakers” or “hidden hands” from derailing the party’s unity agenda.

“We have proposed this unity several times and how many times we have encountered failure. I hope this time it will really happen and we will see it through,” he said, stressing that ummah unity did not mean PAS would compromise or abandon its principles, but involved consolidating Muslim strength around matters that could be mutually agreed upon.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had earlier said the party was obliged to pursue prudent political measures to unite Malay Muslims and non-Muslims who were not extremists as part of Malaysia’s plural society.

The muktamar also unanimously approved motions calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into alleged “corporate mafia” activities, reforms to working hours and the healthcare workforce, and efforts to strengthen the country’s paddy and rice production chain. - September 5, 2026
