A 33-YEAR-OLD Malaysian woman has been detained in Hong Kong after customs officers allegedly found about eight kilogrammes of suspected cannabis worth HK$1.6 million (RM830,000) in her checked luggage, the fourth Malaysian arrested in similar cases since July.
Hong Kong Customs said the woman arrived at Hong Kong International Airport from Bangkok, Thailand, before being intercepted during a customs inspection on Sunday.
“During the inspection, customs officers found about eight kilogrammes of suspected cannabis in her checked luggage.
“The woman was subsequently arrested and the investigation is continuing,” it said in a statement yesterday.
The latest arrest follows three other cases involving Malaysians arriving in Hong Kong with cannabis allegedly concealed in their luggage.
On July 30, a 27-year-old Malaysian man was arrested after about three kilogrammes of cannabis worth HK$600,000 (RM311,000) was allegedly found in his checked luggage following his arrival from Bangkok.
On July 16, a 19-year-old Malaysian man who arrived from Bangkok via Manila was arrested after about 11 kilogrammes of cannabis worth HK$2 million (RM1.04 million) was allegedly found in his checked luggage.
On July 9, another 19-year-old Malaysian man was arrested after arriving from Kuala Lumpur via Singapore with about three kilogrammes of cannabis worth HK$500,000 (RM260,000) in his luggage.
Hong Kong Customs said it would continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking through intelligence analysis.
It also urged the public not to become involved in drug trafficking for financial gain or accept offers from others to carry controlled goods into or out of Hong Kong.
Under Hong Kong’s Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking carries a maximum fine of HK$5 million (RM2.6 million) and life imprisonment upon conviction. - September 14, 2026
