THE image of “sakau politics” has become synonymous with Umno-BN, AMANAH communications director Khalid Abdul Samad said.
He questioned the use of public funds for political purposes, saying claims that such spending was intended to help the people did not address concerns over the use of government resources for the benefit of a political party.
“‘Sakau politics’ is really Umno-BN’s branding. They justify it by saying it is to help the people.
“But when power is abused to channel public and government funds to a political party, that is part of ‘sakau’,” he said during his Bicara Khalid Samad programme on JOM Channel’s Facebook page last night.
Khalid also questioned how some Umno politicians had amassed substantial wealth, asking where the money came from.
“How can you, as a politician, have that much money?” he asked.
He said Umno should take a more balanced and fair position, including by refusing to defend those who had done wrong, if it wanted to shed the “sakau party” image.
“If it wants to get rid of that image, it should not defend those who ‘sauk’.
“Umno should take a more balanced, accurate and fair position, and not defend those who are in the wrong,” he said. – October 3, 2026
