PUTRAJAYA – Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun today urged the police to promptly investigate allegations of sexual harassment by policemen on duty at roadblocks.
In a statement today, Rina said she takes seriously recent media reports on the matter, saying that allegations of such acts should not be taken lightly, especially as it involves enforcement personnel.
She said investigations should be launched so that the victim is given protection and action is taken against the perpetrator.
“In handling this issue, I hope all parties respect each other and will not question the credibility of the police force, which has sacrificed a lot to ensure public order and security in the country. One bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole bunch,” she said.
It was reported that Bukit Aman had replaced the duties of two policemen alleged to have sexually harassed female drivers at roadblocks in separate incidents after the victims uploaded their accounts of the incidents on social media.
Meanwhile, Rina said her ministry is committed to formulating a law on sexual harassment to be tabled in Parliament.
“This law will complement existing laws so that the issue of sexual harassment can be addressed more effectively to protect victims, regardless whether they are women or men,” she said.
She called on all Malaysians, especially women, to come forward and lodge reports if they are victims of sexual harassment through the Talian Kasih hotline at 15999 or Whatsapp to 019-261-5999. – Bernama, February 15, 2021
