KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Razak joined skeptics casting doubt on the nation's decline in Covid-19 case numbers, pointing out the high possibility that the drop is due to a reduction in testing.
“I have been given information that the number of daily Covid-19 tests by the Health Ministry (MoH) has dropped since last week.
“The result: Covid-19 numbers also have dropped,” the former prime minister said in a Facebook post today.
The Pekan MP noted that the Covid-19 positivity rate for the country reported by MoH is above 5%, which shows that the virus is actually raging in the community.
“Is the drop in testing due to MoH’s announcement last month that they are no longer going to test all close contacts of positive patients?” he queried.
Najib said while people laud the drop in recorded infections, they have a right to also realise that testing has reduced as well.
“People are still asking why the numbers are dropping but the number of clusters remains high every day,” he said.
The past eight days saw a drop in Covid-19 numbers. On February 3, Malaysia registered 4,284 infections, but only 2,176 cases yesterday.
However, a chart shared by Najib today showed that only 23,791 tests were performed yesterday compared to 67,264 tests on February 3. – The Vibes, February 16, 2021
