KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today logged 25 new coronavirus deaths, the highest since the pandemic started, said the Health Ministry.
Previously, the grim record was set on February 8, when 24 fatalities were registered.
The latest fatalities bring the national death toll to 1,030.
Of the new deaths, 15 were in Selangor, Sabah and Sarawak (3 each), Kuala Lumpur (2), and Johor and Putrajaya (1 each). Twenty-one were Malaysians.
The ministry also reported 2,712 new infections, taking the total to 274,875, of which 38,763 are active.
New recoveries, meanwhile, number 5,320.
Of the fresh cases, four are imported.
There are 227 Covid-19 patients in intensive care, with 103 intubated.
Selangor has the highest number of new cases at 1,013, followed by Johor (426), Kuala Lumpur (212), Sarawak (200), Perak (198), Kedah (182), Penang (116) and Sabah (114).
States with fewer than 100 cases are Negri Sembilan (81), Pahang (52), Kelantan (43), Melaka (38), Terengganu (19), Putrajaya (7), Perlis (6) and Labuan (5).
The ministry announced 17 new clusters, while 10 have been contained, making for a total of 506 active clusters.
The clusters that have been contained are Silimpopon, Dutamas construction site, Gunung Raya, Taman Juta, Kg Tengah, Alor Durian, Lintas Seraya, Jalan Kelapa, Tampoi Tujuh and J Bandar.
Selangor recorded five new clusters – Jalan Hulu Tinggi (61 cases), Jalan Bukit Kemuning (55), Jalan Jitu (39), Mayang (24) and Jalan Industri Kidamai (22). All are workplace clusters.
Johor, too, has five new clusters – Jalan Perindustrian Estate (53 cases), Jalan DPB Tiga (41), Perindustrian Fasa Dua (27), Jalan Sri Putri (22) and Jalan Tebrau Dua (12).
Sabah has two, both in Penampang – Lot Satu (9 cases) and Lot Tujuh (8). Both clusters stemmed from restaurant workers in the respective industrial lots.
The Mediacity cluster involves Kuala Lumpur’s Cheras, Titiwangsa and Lembah Pantai, and Putrajaya. As of today, 258 individuals have been screened, with 15 infections detected.
Perak’s Jalan Changkat Jong cluster was detected after a targeted screening at a company, in which 471 individuals were tested, saw 166 positive cases.
Initial cases in Penang’s Lintang Kg Jawa cluster were detected on February 1, after symptomatic individuals were screened. The cluster involves factory workers in the said area in the Bayan Lepas industrial park. It now has 86 cases.
The Jalan Telok Ira cluster in Temerloh, Pahang, involves an education facility, with 47 cases logged.
