KUALA LUMPUR – Umno will reveal the outcome of last week’s meeting between party chiefs in its own time, said its information chief, Shahril Hamdan.
“Umno was the one that had a meeting, why is the other party concerned? It seems like a supreme council member of a certain party has been given an ‘assignment’ to openly question and attack Umno,” Shahril said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Bersatu supreme council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman had pushed for the result of the meeting to be made public, amid whispers the Barisan Nasional lynchpin had decided to sever ties with the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition once the emergency is lifted in August.
But, “we don’t see him making statements about his own party”, Shahril said.
“Now, he wants Umno to announce the outcome of its meeting. If Umno wants to reveal any decision from the meeting, Umno will do it in its own timeline, and it will be announced by the party president or (secretary-general).
“Using the media to openly push Umno to reveal the internal affairs of the party is only showing the weakness of the person.”
Umno had earlier denied reports that it would end its alliance with Bersatu and PN after the tentative August 1 deadline for the national state of emergency.
In a statement, the party said reports regarding the Umno Supreme Council’s Working Committee (MKT) decision should be treated as false, unless it came from official channels.
“Umno headquarters takes seriously the reports related to the decision of the MKT meeting yesterday,” the statement issued on Saturday read.
News reports have quoted unnamed sources as saying that Umno’s top brass will part ways with Perikatan Nasional following its leadership meeting in Janda Baik, Pahang, on Friday. – The Vibes, February 22, 2021
