KULA LUMPUR – Klang MP Charles Santiago has confirmed that he will be in Bukit Aman next Monday to give a statement after a report was made against him in Kedah in relation to his response after Malaysiakini was found to be in contempt of court.
In a tweet, he said he is being summoned to the police headquarters at 10.30am on March 1.
Santiago has defended his right to speak freely on issues of public interest amid a police investigation into him and Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan over their comments on the Federal Court’s ruling last week.
Citing Article 10 of the federal constitution, Santiago said he has the right to free speech and expression.
“And, in this regard, I should be able to express my views and concerns about the verdict without the fear of contempt or police reports, in this instance,” he said.
Santiago added that the Federal Court’s decision was not unanimous, as there was one dissenting judgment out of the seven on the bench.
“It’s equally important to remember that Federal Court decisions have been reversed and, as a lawmaker, I am duty-bound to speak out.”
Kuala Muda district police chief Adzli Abu Shah confirmed that two separate police reports were lodged by the same person yesterday in Gurun, Kedah, and that the case is being investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act. – The Vibes, February 25, 2021
