TASEK GELUGOR – Penang Perikatan Nasional (PN) welcomes Gerakan to the coalition as the party can help it reclaim the state from Pakatan Harapan, said state PN chairman Datuk Shabudin Yahaya.
The Tasek Gelugor MP said the presence of Gerakan, which had led Penang for 39 years, complements PN, thus giving new hope to the alliance to win the next general election.
“On February 24, I received a visit from Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau, with a delegate from the party. We are currently discussing the political direction together in an effort to form an understanding.”
On February 11, Lau received a letter of acceptance on Gerakan’s bid to join PN from pact chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the prime minister’s office in Putrajaya.
Lau said the party remains focused on wrestling Penang, which it led from 1969 to 2008, from DAP.
Shabudin, who is also deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and law), said Penang PN will hold its inaugural meeting this Sunday.
The meeting, however, will be held without Gerakan to strategise the positioning of all member parties.
“The first meeting will be held without Gerakan as we want to determine the best position for the party.
“Gerakan will join only in the second meeting, which will be held next month.”
On seat distributions, Shabudin said it will be discussed in the meeting.
