KOTA BELUD – The Environment and Water Ministry has allocated RM77 million to flood-mitigation projects in the district here, said Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
During his visit here today, he told reporters that RM27 million is allocated to the Sg Gurong-Gurong flood-mitigation project expected to be completed next year, and RM50 million is for the ongoing construction of projects in Sg Kadamaian, Sg Tempasuk, Sg Abai and Sg Kawang-Kawang.
He said these projects will reduce the risk of flooding in Kota Belud, which has been hit by floods 86 times following an earthquake in 2015.
The quake caused changes to the terrain, especially river basins, resulting in frequent flooding, he said, adding that the ministry will work with the relevant state agencies to find a solution to the issue of sand blocking river flow.
In the meantime, he said, the ministry will conduct a study of river basins in Sabah, which will serve as a guideline for future developments near waterways. – Bernama, February 27, 2021
