KUALA LUMPUR – Water purifiers with heating and cooling technology have been identified as a cause of high electricity bills, said Selangor Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) retail chief Ismail Lathifi Teh.
He said electrical appliances with cooling systems, such as refrigerators, air conditioners and water purifiers, use a lot of power to maintain a constant temperature, especially in the current hot weather.
“During hot weather, machines with compressors use more energy to maintain a steady temperature,” he told Bernama today.
“So, if we keep opening the refrigerator door or taking chilled water from the water purifier at home, more electricity is required to maintain the cold temperature.”
On water purifiers, he said, whenever the chilled water stored in the tank runs out, more water flows into the tank, and the compressor is kept running to bring down the water’s temperature.
“As more water is filled, the compressor’s cooling system continues to operate, resulting in higher electricity consumption.”
To reduce power consumption by air conditioners, he advised consumers to use the timer function, and set the temperature only at 24°C to 26°C.
“Consumers are encouraged to use the timer so that the air conditioner switches off early in the morning, like 2am onwards, when the room has cooled down.
“Switch on the fan to maintain the cool temperature.”
He urged people to service their air conditioners regularly, to ensure the equipment is able to operate efficiently and economically.
“I have received complaints from consumers that they do not use air conditioners, but their electricity bill has increased substantially.
“They forget that other electrical appliances also consume electricity.” – Bernama, March 3, 2021
