KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that Malaysia logged 1,529 fresh Covid-19 cases and eight deaths today, marking a third day of infections being below the 2,000 mark.
In a statement, the health director-general said the new cases bring the cumulative number to 314,989, and that the total death toll due to the virus thus far is 1,177.
The country also recorded 2,076 recoveries, bringing the total number of patients discharged to 294,034.
Nine of the new cases today were imported. Of the 19,778 active cases, 160 are under intensive care while 79 require breathing assistance.
Selangor recorded the most infections with 726 new cases, followed by Sarawak (252), Johor (120), Negeri Sembilan (89) and Penang (76).
Kuala Lumpur and Sabah both recorded 71 cases each, followed by Perak (49), Kelantan (28), Perlis (17) Terengganu (13), Kedah (9), Pahang (3) and Putrajaya (1).
No new cases were reported in Labuan today.
Dr Noor Hisham said 34 of the cases recorded today came from detention centres involving the DTI Persiaran Wawasan cluster (17 cases), Jalan Harapan prison cluster (8), Tembok Taiping cluster (5), Sungai Jelok prison cluster (2), Tembok Bukit Besi cluster (1) and the Tembok Pengkalan Chepa cluster (1).
Sabah, Penang, and Johor each recorded two deaths, while Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak logged one fatality each. Seven of the deaths involved locals, while one was a non-citizen.
Dr Noor Hisham said the country has so far seen 1,203 clusters, including four new clusters today.
A total of 736 clusters have ended, including nine today: these are the Jalan Perindustrian, Selasih Perindu, Keladi Saga, Sri Sengkang, Jalan Permata, Jalan Cyber Lima, Tinanom, Jalan Waja and Persiaran Hulu clusters.
He added that 62 active clusters recorded new cases today. The clusters that recorded the highest number of infections are the Industri Sungai Gadut cluster (51), Industri Subang cluster (36), and Kebun Baru (22).
Three out of the four new clusters were workplace clusters, while one is from the community.
Johor recorded the Cyber 72 cluster in the Kulai district with 18 cases and the Jalan i-Park Tiga cluster in the same district with eight cases.
In Kuala Lumpur, the Jalan Loke Yew cluster at Cheras had 11 new cases, while Terengganu saw the Bukit Bayas cluster at Kuala Terengganu having 23 cases. – The Vibes, March 8, 2021
