KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications and Multimedia Ministry is planning to set up a special foundation to help media practitioners who have lost their jobs, said Deputy Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin.
He said the proposal is being discussed with the related associations, and that he expects the foundation to be established soon.
It will not only help pressmen retrenched due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but will also provide welfare assistance to industry workers.
“This foundation will be managed by media associations with the help of the government. There should be government intervention to help the foundation succeed,” Zahidi told the press at Wisma TV Angkasapuri here today.
“We (ministry) also plan to give a tax exemption to any company that contributes to the foundation.”
Earlier, he chaired a nearly two-hour meeting with representatives from six media groups, including the Association of Former Journalists and Photographers.
During the meet, he said the associations involved have appealed for Putrajaya to consider special allocations for the benefit of industry workers impacted by the pandemic. – Bernama, March 9, 2021
