KUALA LUMPUR – Former Batu Berendam MP Datuk Tamrin Abdul Ghafar has been charged over a blog post published last year slamming Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
Tamrin, who is the son of the late deputy prime minister Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba, faces up to a year in prison, or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, if found guilty of having made seditious remarks.
He was charged at the Johor Baru sessions court under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, for improper use of network facilities or network services.
His bail was set at RM8,000 with one surety, and case management will be on May 23.
Tamrin, in the post dated February 2 last year, criticised Tunku Ismail after the latter’s comments on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
His post, which was also shared on his Facebook account, called the crown prince names and made allegations about the royal’s various business interests.
Despite the legal action taken, the post is still up on Tamrin’s blog and Facebook account. – The Vibes, March 10, 2021
