KUALA LUMPUR – The alleged suicide of a 54-year-old man in Cheras police lock-up two days ago must be investigated, said civil society group Eliminating Death and Abuse in Custody Together (Edict).
In a statement today, it said the suicide claim is nonsensical as the lock-up is constantly watched by closed-circuit television cameras and monitored by several police officers.
“Edict is concerned with the increasing frequency of deaths in detention.
“This case warrants an inquest, which is mandatory for every death that occurs in police custody or prison. This is clearly stated in Section 334 of the criminal procedure code.
“Edict would also like to reiterate that there is no need or reason for a death to occur in custody. Deaths in detention can be prevented if there is no complacency in managing detainees.”
The organisation called on members of the public who have information regarding the case to come forward so it can assist the victim’s family in taking legal action against those responsible. – The Vibes, March 10, 2021
