MIRI – Sarawak has hit a record daily total of 407 Covid-19 infections today, no thanks to cases among numerous illegal Indonesian workers in the state.
The state today overtook Selangor as the leading state with the most virus cases.
State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that the coronavirus death toll in Sarawak has also increased, with 96 fatalities today.
A 55-year old man was confirmed in Sibu Hospital to have died from Covid-19.
“There is one new fatality today plus 407 new positive cases,” Uggah said.
“The situation is still very serious, especially with more illegals being detected with Covid-19.
“Out of the 407 new cases today, 138 cases are from the illegal migrants at the Semuja Depot Cluster in Serian,” he told a press conference at his office in Kuching.
Serian district today saw 140 new cases, while Sibu saw 65, Miri 49, Betong 40, Bintulu 26, Sri Aman 23, Kuching 19, Samarahan 11, Kapit 10, and other districts below 10 new cases.
There are still 34 active clusters throughout the state.
Uggah said 56 longhouses are still under lockdown.
He once again stressed the need for very strict adherence to all SOPs, especially the wearing of face masks, social distancing, and ensuring personal hygiene. – The Vibes, March 19, 2021
