KUALA LUMPUR – Internal investigations are insufficient to clean up the police force, said Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo, following allegations by the country’s top cop on a “cartel” working within the body to bring him down.
In a statement today, Gobind said such claims call for open and transparent investigations, and if an offence has been committed, those involved must face the full force of the law.
“I urge the IGP to seriously reconsider the position. He should direct for a report to be lodged, launch a full probe into the complaint, and let the law take its course.
“While I commend the IGP for speaking up on the matter, and his push to clean up the police force, his actions must measure up to his words and address the serious nature of the allegations made.
“Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador must direct that reports be lodged against the officers concerned.”
He added that such claims destroy the foundation of police confidence and trust.
“Police officers, no matter how high their rank, are not above the law.”
Yesterday, Hamid gave an assurance that allegations of a cartel within the force will be addressed without the need to lodge a report with the Police Force Commission (SPP).
“I will convey this matter to Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. There is no need (for a report), but it is up to the minister whether the matter is to be raised to SPP or not.
“Some have asked for a royal commission of inquiry. I would like to stress that it is under control,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters.
Almost a week ago, he told Sinar Harian that there is a cartel in the force that includes younger officers conspiring to remove him.
He said these officers are the masterminds of a cartel that wants to dominate the country’s security force for their personal interest.
“There are efforts by the cartel to disgrace and bring me down.”
Hamid was appointed IGP on a contract basis after his retirement. His contract ends on May 3. – The Vibes, March 23, 2021
