GEORGE TOWN – Fishermen came to the rescue of a woman attempting suicide at Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge yesterday.

The 24-year-old victim had left her car by the roadside with the door open, and her mobile phone on the front passenger seat.

A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman told The Vibes that personnel from the Bayan Baru and Batu Kawan stations were deployed after receiving an emergency call about 7.15pm.

“The victim was rescued by a fisherman who happened to be near the scene, at the 81st pole of the bridge.

“The victim, who is believed to be suffering from depression, said she was disappointed that she didn’t die after jumping down.”

A group of fishermen brought the woman to the Batu Uban jetty, where police took over, she said.

Under Section 309 of the Penal Code, attempted suicide is punishable by a maximum one year’s jail, or a fine, or both.

On Monday, the Penang government expressed concern about the increasing number of suicides in the state.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow had said the state police chief has reported 53 cases of suicide from January to May, and 19 of attempted suicide.

Those suffering mental health issues can call Talian Kasih at 15999, or reach out to Befrienders at 03-7627-2929 or [email protected], for support. – The Vibes, June 26, 2021
