KUALA LUMPUR – The two families of three babies, one of whom was swapped at birth 20 years ago, believed due to negligence by staff of a hospital in Kota Baru, Kelantan, have appointed lawyers to advise them and take legal action over the incident.
Counsel Samry Masri, on behalf of Messrs Sam Masri & Associates, Messrs Khairul Naim Rafidi, Messrs Azam Rashid & Co and Messrs Mohd Nasir & Co, said the team was appointed last November.
“The incident has caused much misery and suffering to our clients and their families. We will do our best to ensure that justice is done,” he said in a statement to Bernama last night.
He said a letter has been sent to Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital (HRPZ II) seeking its cooperation on providing the relevant birth and medical records.
The lawyers welcomed the statements by state health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin and HRPZ II director Datuk Dr Selasawati Ghazali on investigating the matter, and tracing the documents required and employees involved.
“We appreciate the statements and views of Kelantan Mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad, psychologists, as well as other parties who have been sympathetic to the plight of our clients and their families,” said the statement.
It was reported that a twin girl was swapped with another baby, and the two affected families found out the truth only 19 years later.
The matter came to light when Adryani Iwani, her “twin sister” Adryana Irwani, and her actual twin Noratirah Husin, all 20, underwent a DNA test last September. – Bernama, June 30, 2021
