[UPDATED] Covid-19 cases climb back up to 6,988, 84 deaths logged

KUALA LUMPUR – Daily Covid-19 cases climbed again today to the upper 6,000s, with the nation logging 6,988 in the past 24 hours.

The Health Ministry said this takes the cumulative total to 758,967. Of the new cases, only five are imported.

Meanwhile, the nation also saw 84 fatalities to the coronavirus, taking the death toll to 5,254.

Of the 19 patients who passed away – none of whom listed comorbidities – three of them were below 40 years old.

These three include a 38-year-old foreign male who was brought dead to University Malaya Medical Centre, a 23-year-old local male who passed away in Hospital Selayang, and a 32-year-old local female who was also brought dead to Miri Hospital in Sarawak.

While 5,580 recoveries were logged, 917 remain in intensive care, with 445 requiring breathing support.

Selangor remains the state with the highest number of infections at 2,885, followed by Kuala Lumpur (988), Negri Sembilan (692), Sarawak (544), Melaka (311), Johor (270), Kedah (250), and Sabah (232).

The states that saw fewer than 200 cases are Pahang with 195, followed by Penang (174), Perak (149), Labuan (129), Kelantan (108), Terengganu (50), Putrajaya (10), and Perlis (1).

With regard to clusters, the Health Ministry reports 887 remain active including the 21 new ones identified today.

Out of these 21 clusters, 11 involved worksites involving Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Perak. In total, these worksite clusters recorded 202 infections.

Meanwhile, nine new clusters involving the community were identified involving Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah, Kedah, and Johor, registering 196 cases cumulatively.
