GEORGE TOWN – Inspired by the #benderaputih campaign aimed at helping households in dire need of food and essentials, the Penang government has approved an extra RM1.04 million to assist the state’s needy.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the additional allocation will be given to all assemblymen, so that they can come to the aid of constituents flying the white flag.
“This special allocation is to help residents who need assistance, whether in food or other forms.
“Those who need help can contact their respective elected representatives.”
The online campaign calls on those who lack food and basic items to fly a white flag outside their homes, allowing others in the community to be aware of their situation and provide help.
Government lawmakers, including Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, have been lambasted for allegedly trying to “hijack” the push.
The campaign has also been ridiculed by Bachok MP Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, who said people should pray to God for help and not admit defeat. – The Vibes, July 1, 2021
