[UPDATED] 6,658 new Covid-19 cases, 107 deaths; S’gor claims 3,047 infections

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 6,658 new Covid-19 cases today, slightly lower than the 6,982 infections yesterday.

Daily coronavirus deaths are back to three digits at 107, bringing the death toll to 5,434.

The nation recorded 5,677 recoveries today, while 892 patients are in intensive care, with 443 intubated.

Selangor maintains its lead as the state with the highest number of infections with 3,047, followed by Negri Sembilan (699), Kuala Lumpur (616) and Johor (414).

States with fewer than 400 cases are Sarawak (361), Melaka (345), Sabah (322), Pahang (200), Kedah (145), Penang (142), Labuan (108), Perak (101), Kelantan (89), Terengganu (51), Putrajaya (16) and Perlis (2).

The Health Ministry reported that the latest infectivity rate (R-naught) for the nation is at 1.07, as of yesterday.

Despite Selangor having the highest number of daily cases nationwide, Pahang has the highest R-naught at 1.27.

Putrajaya recorded an R-naught of 1.13, Selangor (1.07), Penang (1.07), Melaka (1.07), Kuala Lumpur (1.03), Kedah (1.03) and Perak (1.00).

As for clusters, 871 remain active, including the 19 new ones today.

Of the new clusters, 16 involve worksites in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Pahang, Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Johor and Sarawak. In total, they all recorded 605 infections.

Two clusters involving the community were identified in Kedah and Kelantan, with 38 Covid-19 cases in total, and one cluster involved a detention centre in Sarawak with 29 cases.

Sarawak saw new coronavirus clusters involving an offshore oil platform, immigration depot, police lock-up and security firm.

The 35 Bintulu cluster recorded 15 cases involving offshore workers at an oil platform, while the Semuja cluster in Serian saw 71 detainees from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Myanmar infected with Covid-19 at an immigration depot.

The Pagar cluster in Tebedu recorded 29 cases involving individuals held in a police lock-up, and the Jalan Haji Taha cluster, involving a security firm, in Kuching logged 121 cases.

The state also registered 361 new coronavirus cases and one death, bringing the death toll to 418. The fresh fatality involved a 62-year-old woman in Kapit Hospital.

Kuching recorded 77 cases today, followed by Sibu (33), Subis (32), Bau (27), Bintulu (25), Saratok (22) and Miri (22), while other districts have fewer than 20 each. – The Vibes, July 3, 2021
