KUALA LUMPUR – Umno veteran Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is ready to take on the responsibility of being interim prime minister, if given the chance.

He told a programme hosted by Sinar Harian tonight that anyone, himself included, would shoulder that responsibility in the interest of the rakyat should Malaysia find itself facing yet another political crisis, such as last year’s Sheraton Move.

“It might be overwhelming to even try, but if it becomes one’s responsibility, one must bear it for the benefit of the people.”

Tengku Razaleigh was among the names floated to lead the country following the #KerajaanGagal online movement that gained traction recently.

His comments also come amid a backdrop of Umno’s “dilemma” – whether to stay with or leave the Perikatan Nasional administration.

Just hours ago, Umno vice-president and Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob was appointed deputy prime minister, while Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein was elevated as a senior minister.

The promotion of the Umno duo is seen as a move by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to pre-empt party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s plans to leave the ruling coalition. – The Vibes, July 7, 2021
