[UPDATED] M’sia logs 87 Covid-19 fatalities, highest daily cases to date with 9,353

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today recorded its highest-ever daily Covid-19 infections since the start of the pandemic, with 9,353.

The tally of Covid-19 cases in the country is now at 827,191 and despite being in some form of lockdown since June 1, daily cases has steadily gone up amid a struggling healthcare system.

Just 11 of the infections today were imported.

Selangor logged 4,277 and Kuala Lumpur saw 1,398 and Melaka recorded 835.

Negri Sembilan had 638, Johor (399), Kedah (364), Sarawak (352), Sabah (251).

Pahang recorded 247 Covid-19 cases, Penang (180), Perak (145),  Kelantan (89), Labuan (85), Terengganu (50), Putrajaya (39), Perlis (4).

There were 5,910 recoveries today, bringing all discharged Covid-19 patients nationwide so far to 737,103.

There were 87 deaths from Covid-19 in the last day, meanwhile, bringing the death toll past the 6,000 mark to 6,067.

959 patients are currently in intensive care, with 451 needing ventilator support.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 87 deaths today, 50 were in Selangor, eight in Johor, and six in Pahang.

Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, and Negri Sembilan recorded five deaths each today, while Melaka logged four deaths, and Penang logged two deaths. 

Kelantan and Labuan saw one death each today.

Sarawak sees flare-up in cases linked to longhouses in two districts

Meanwhile, in Sarawak, the Sg Setajam cluster in Sarikei district recorded 75 cases following a social gathering at a longhouse.

While Rumah Rantie in Bintangor district has been placed under enhanced movement control order (EMCO) for two weeks, said the state Disaster Management Committee.

The EMCO has also been enforced at oil palm plantation Ladang Sebubun along the Miri-Bintulu coastal highway due to a spike in infection among its workers.

Sarawak today saw 352 new infections – Sarikei district has 65, Kuching (64), Saratok (29), Lubok Antu (19), Sibu (19), Meradong (18), Telang Usan (17), Bintulu (13), Miri (13) and other districts with fewer than 10 cases each.

The committee said there were no new fatalities in the state, keeping the toll at 429.

19 of 29 new Covid-19 clusters found at workplaces

The health director-general, meanwhile, said of the 29 new clusters today, 19 were from workplaces, five from the community, two from high-risk groups, and three from detention centres.

In Selangor, the Jalan Dua Salak Tinggi cluster in Sepang, Klang, and Kuala Selangor registered 23 cases, the Industri Perigi Lapan cluster in Klang registered 15 cases, and the Industri Jalan Perajurit Satu cluster in Klang recorded 17 cases today.

Also in Selangor, the Industri Jalan Perajurit Dua cluster in Klang recorded 19 cases, while the Industri Taman Ehsan cluster in Gombak recorded 12 cases, and the Jalan Sri Siantan cluster in Klang logged 24 cases.

Kuala Lumpur registered the Jalan Solaris cluster in Kepong with 9 cases, the Jalil Utama 2 construction site cluster in Cheras with 78 cases, the Sri Rakyat community cluster in Cheras with 158 cases, and the Taman Jaya cluster in Cheras and Titiwangsa with 34 cases.

In Johor, the Jalan Tg Puteri construction site cluster in Johor Baru logged 19 cases, the Selabu construction site cluster in Muar logged 29 cases, the Susur Enam Larkin cluster in Johor Baru recorded 11 cases, and the Jalan Lombong Dua cluster in Kota Tinggi recorded 17 cases today.

Johor also registered the Jalan Pendas Laut cluster in Kota Baru with nine cases, the PLO Jalan Emas cluster in Johor Baru with nine cases, and the Sri Bunian community cluster in Pontian with 16 cases.

In Sabah, the Jalan Membalua cluster in Tawau logged 13 cases, the KKIP Empat Timur cluster in Kota Kinabalu recorded 10 cases, while the Balak Penangah cluster in Tongod and Nabawan recorded 26 cases, and the Taman Grandview cluster in Sandakan and Putatan logged 14 cases today.

Sarawak recorded the Tembok Sri Aman 2 detention centre cluster in Sri Aman with 69 cases, the Pagar Serian cluster in Serian with 16 cases, and the Semuja detention centre cluster in Serian with 67 cases. 

Terengganu registered the Industri Lot Q workplace cluster in Dungun and Kemaman with 23 cases. 

In Pahang, the Jalan Tengku Abdul Samad construction site cluster in Raub saw 15 cases while the Jalan Gebeng 2/3 cluster in Kuantan logged nine cases today.

Melaka recorded 24 cases at the Rebana Jernih cluster in Alor Gajah today. – The Vibes, July 10, 2021
