MELAKA – A 54-year-old housewife suffered losses amounting to RM7,000 after her jewellery was stolen by a man she befriended on TikTok two weeks ago, who promised to provide her with basic necessities.

Melaka CID chief Mohd Sukri Kaman said in the incident at 11am last Saturday, the suspect visited the victim at her house in Taman Desa Air Merbau, Jasin, to take the woman out to buy basic items at a nearby supermarket.

“However, the suspect tricked the victim by entering her house and stealing the jewellery before fleeing. The woman then lodged a police report on the same day,” he said in a statement today.

Police advised the public to seek assistance from channels such as government agencies or non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and not to provide personal details through social media platforms to strangers.

Sukri said a group of individuals are taking advantage of the Covid-19 situation by using the modus operandi of contacting or visit victims’ houses on the pretext of assisting them, but only to steal or rob them.

“Melaka police view the impersonation cases seriously and will not hesitate to take stern action against those who commit such crimes,” he said.

In a separate statement, police are tracking down the individuals responsible for hanging a statue with the words “Kerajaan pembunuh” (murderer government) at the Ayer Keroh Melaka Trade Centre (MITC) junction here this morning.

Melaka Tengah district police chief Afzanizar Ahmad said the statue, which donned a white shirt, blue pants and a straw hat, was brought down by police after they were alerted to the incident at 7.40am. – Bernama, July 12, 2021
