JOHOR BARU – Seventy football bookies were arrested in Johor under the month-long Op Soga VIII up till July 12 over bets on Euro 2020 matches, involving a total of RM44 million.

State police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the suspects are aged 17 to 65, and that officers seized various items including mobile phones and laptops, as well as cash amounting to RM42,535.

“All those detained have been remanded between two and four days to facilitate investigations,” he told a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters here today.

He said the bookies are from different gambling syndicates operating on premises statewide, but especially in the Johor capital.

He said the probe is being conducted under Sections 6(3), 6(1) and 4(1)(d) of the Betting Act 1953.

The month-long football fiesta ended early on Monday Malaysian time with Italy defeating England 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out after they were caught in a 1-1 draw. – Bernama, July 14, 2021
