KUALA LUMPUR – The authorities have been urged to close care centres for children, persons with disabilities (PwDs) and the elderly that are not registered with the Social Welfare Department (SWD), so as to ensure these groups’ safety.
Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Mohd Radzi said the Care Centres Act 1993 should be amended and improved so that only registered facilities are allowed to operate.
“I also call for action to be taken against those who run unregistered care centres, and for such centres to be shut down so that we can ensure the safety of their occupants,” she told Bernama today.
“It is hoped that the relevant authorities, especially SWD and the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, will take the necessary action.”
She said the closures are vital as most abuse cases are recorded at unregistered centres. – Bernama, July 15, 2021
