KUALA LUMPUR – The latest data from Sg Buloh Hospital up till yesterday has shown a drastic drop in severe Covid-19 cases, namely Categories 4 and 5, among the elderly from the 23rd epidemiological week (EW).
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said the downward trend is in line with Phase 2 of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme that began in April and which showed early signs of effectiveness in the 22nd EW.
Among patients aged 60 to 79, 217 in the related categories were admitted in the 21st EW, with the number dropping to 125 in the 23rd EW and 119 in the current 28th EW.
Category 4 patients suffer pneumonia and require oxygen support, while those in Category 5 need respiratory aid.
Dr Noor Hisham said beginning July 17, senior citizens aged 60 and above who have not received their inoculation appointment can walk into any vaccination centre (PPV) in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for a jab the same day.
“In addition, PPVs will continue to operate every weekend, including public holidays. These measures are in line with the Health Ministry’s commitment to attain herd immunity as soon as possible.”
He advised Malaysians to show up for their appointments as scheduled and comply with the standard operating procedures throughout the vaccination process. – Bernama, July 19, 2021
