KUCHING – Sarawak Assistant Community Well-being Minister Datuk Francis Harden Hollis today revealed the existence of a syndicate that distributes drugs for free to school students in the state in order to get them hooked.
Without exposing details of the syndicate’s activity, he said school students are an easy target, adding that the situation is worrying.
“They (school students) will first be given the drug for free, and when they start to enjoy it, they will want to buy it, and if there is no supply, they will look for the syndicate.”
He said students who have become addicted will ask their parents for money to buy drugs, adding that there are those who even stopped their schooling.
Sarawak recorded 4,259 arrests due to drug and substance abuse since January, with Kuching reporting the highest number at 1,157, followed by Bintulu (392), Sibu (329), Samarahan (325) and Miri (317). – Bernama, July 21, 2021
