[UPDATED] Covid-19 cases back up to 16,117, another 207 deaths logged, 1,023 in ICU

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia saw 16,117 new Covid-19 cases today, up from 14,516 yesterday. 

Over half of these new infections were in the Klang Valley, with 6,616 in Selangor and 2,457 in Kuala Lumpur.

Kedah recorded 1,000 new cases, Johor had 907, Sabah (741), Negri Sembilan (669), Melaka (674), Penang (618), Kelantan (592) and Perak (583).

Sarawak recorded 405 infections, Pahang had two fewer with 403, and Terengganu logged 317. 

Putrajaya notched up 122 new Covid-19 cases, Labuan had 11 and Perlis saw two.

With these, the country’s total caseload hits 1,044,071.

The Health Ministry reported another 207 deaths – same as yesterday – making for 8,408 lives lost since the pandemic began.

Of the 1,023 patients in intensive care, 524 require breathing aid.

Another 11,526 recoveries push up the total to 865,439.

Sarawak logged two more deaths – a 50-year-old Indonesian citizen who worked near Bukit Mabong and died after being admitted to Sibu Hospital and a 76-year-old woman who died after being admitted to Bintulu Hospital.

The state’s death toll is at 459.

Of the state’s new infections, Kuching has 255, Samarahan 60, Sibu 20, and Bau 11.

Tan Sri Noor Hisham said of the 16,117 cases, 87 are category five, 124 are category four, 135 are category three, 6,710 are category two, and 9,061 are category one. 

Of the 207 deaths today, 96 were from Selangor, 34 from Kuala Lumpur, 21 from Johor, 17 from Melaka, and 15 from Kedah.

Negri Sembilan logged seven deaths, Kelantan five, Sabah and Terengganu recorded three deaths each, while Sarawak and Pahang saw two deaths each today. 

Penang and Labuan each logged one death. 

The nation’s infectivity rate is at 1.14 as of yesterday. 

The state with the highest rate is Terengganu (1.29), followed by Kedah (1.26), and Sabah (1.23). 

All states have a higher rate than 1.00, except Labuan (0.66) and Perlis (0). 

The ministry reported 42 new clusters today. 

Of the new clusters, 25 clusters originated from workplaces in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sabah, Kedah, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Pahang, and Perak. They recorded 643 cases today. 

Twelve cluster came from communities in Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu, Sarawak, Kedah, Selangor, and Sabah. They registered 283 cases in total. 

Two clusters from high-risk groups in Terengganu and Selangor logged 61 cases today. 

Another two clusters from two detention centres in Perak recorded 203 cases. 

A learning institution cluster in Putrajaya has logged 21 cases today. – The Vibes, July 27, 2021
