Probe paper on SOP-flouting Aidiladha prayers in Juru completed

GEORGE TOWN – Police have completed an investigation paper on an incident involving a group of individuals who violated standard operating procedures by performing Aidiladha prayers in Taman Pelangi, Juru, near here, on July 20.

Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the paper has been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) for further instruction and action.

“The investigation on the case has been completed with 84 people, aged between 25 and 61, comprising 83 foreign nationals and a local man being detained to assist in the investigation.

“But all have been given police bail while waiting for the decision and further action from the DPP.”

There has been public outcry over pictures of the detention and remand of the foreign nationals, who were shoeless and handcuffed to the court, but Suhaily said it is normal procedure and did not flout protocol.

In another matter, police have detained 14 individuals, including eight women, to facilitate in an investigation into a religious ceremony held in honour of a deceased family member in Bayan Lepas four days ago.

Shuhaily said police received information on the group of individuals, who conducted the ceremony, and identified 24 of them, before detaining 14 for further investigation.

“All those detained, aged from 25 to 40, are family members of the deceased, and an investigation paper on the case has been submitted to the DPP for further instruction.”

A 23-second video showing more than 10 individuals, including children, holding a religious ritual at a housing area in Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim, Bayan Lepas, in honour of a deceased family member has gone viral since yesterday. – Bernama, July 29, 2021
