MIRI – The #Lawan demonstration against the federal government in Kuala Lumpur’s Dataran Merdeka today also saw some Sarawakians join in from afar.
In Miri, black banners bearing the words “kerajaan gagal” (failed government) were hoisted at prominent areas including overhead bridges, while people in the outskirts were also involved according to posts on social media.
Commercial centres such as the Boulevard and Morsjaya also played host to similar banners.
“It is not clear who was the person or persons or group who had displayed these banners.
“They were hung this morning,” said a resident.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii told The Vibes that it was the work of people influenced by what’s happening in the peninsula.

“These people want to stir up protests similar to the ones in West Malaysia.
“In Kuala Lumpur there were protests against the federal government today.
“Now, it looks like there are locals in this state who want to stir up the same thing,” he said.
On the possibility of local politicians or political groups being involved, Yii said he was unsure.
