KUALA LUMPUR – Twenty-nine people will be hauled up for questioning over yesterday’s #Lawan protest, said Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.
In a statement, he said officers are in the process of identifying more individuals, based on video clips and photos, to have their statements recorded under Act 342, or the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, over possible Covid-19 standard operating procedure breaches.
He added that more than 20 reports have been lodged following the demonstration.
Police repeatedly warned against holding the rally, he said, adding that “stubborn” protesters could give rise to more Covid-19 infections.
“Police have constantly reminded the public to follow the SOPs under the National Recovery Plan, and action will be taken against anyone who violates the rules.
“The stubbornness of protesters, although they’ve been told to take care of their health first, is extremely irresponsible.”
He said police’s monitoring of the protest found incidents of the SOPs being flouted.
The #Lawan rally calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin saw a turnout of between 400 and 2,000, with the authorities and organisers giving different tallies.
The demonstrators were not allowed into Dataran Merdeka, the original protest venue, but they continued their demonstration along Jalan Tun Perak. – The Vibes, August 1, 2021
