KUALA LUMPUR – Pahang Umno chief Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail has joined others in asserting that the emergency proclamation and its ordinances must be presented and debated in Dewan Rakyat.
He added that this should be the process to revoke the state of emergency and its ordinances as this was promised to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong by Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun.
“This is a necessity because the ordinances provide it will stay in force six months after the emergency ends,” Wan Rosdy, who is also Pahang menteri besar, said in a Facebook post yesterday.
He also commented on a statement made by MIC president Tan Sri S. Vigneswaran who said the current political situation in the country is seeing the monarch advise the cabinet.
Among other things Vigneswaran said under Article 40(1) of the federal constitution, the Agong must follow the advice of his cabinet.
“Article 40(1) has some exceptions. If you look at Article 40(2), there are circumstances where the Agong can exercise discretion,” Wan Rosdy countered.
On Vigneswaran’s query about why “dirty linen was being washed in public”, Wan Rosdy said: “What is crucial is that the rakyat is aware, and they have the right to know what is really going on.”
The two-week closure of the Dewan Rakyat has sparked outrage among lawmakers who are not aligned with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government. – The Vibes, August 2, 2021
