KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 15,764 new Covid-19 cases today, marking a decline from the above 17,000 mark for several days straight.
However, it marked its highest daily death count since the pandemic began at 219, bringing the toll to 9,403.
Selangor logged the lion’s share of infections with 6,067, followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,536), Johor (1,222), Sabah (1,166) and Kedah (1,108).
States with fewer than 1,000 cases are Negri Sembilan (862), Perak (748), Penang (667), Kelantan (552), Pahang (475), Melaka (463), Terengganu (425) and Sarawak (411).
Putrajaya, Perlis and Labuan logged 46, nine and seven cases, respectively.
Recoveries stood at 11,767 today, marking 937,732 people discharged since the pandemic began. A total of 1,063 patients are in intensive care, of which 532 need breathing aid.
Of the 15,764 infections today, 8,783, 6,695 and 135 are classified as Categories 1, 2 and 3, respectively. More than half of the patients in each category have not been immunised.
A total of 64 patients are under Category 4, and 87 under Category 5.
Of the fresh fatalities, Selangor claimed 105, Kuala Lumpur (41), Johor (24), Melaka (9), Pahang (8) and Negri Sembilan (7), while Kedah and Perak each have six, Kelantan and Terengganu each have four, and Sabah, three.
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Labuan and Perlis each recorded one death.
Malaysia registered a total of 3,731 clusters, including 29 new ones today. A total of 2,603 have ended, while 1,128 remain active.
The new clusters comprise 13 from worksites, 11 from the community, three from high-risk groups, one from an educational institution and another from religious activity.
Kelantan takes the lead with 10 clusters, of which six are community-related.
Five of the new community clusters – of which Kelantan claims three, and Kedah and Johor each claim one – broke out due to festive season-related visitations.
The Tapak Bina Bati Lima 2 workplace cluster in Lembah Pantai here recorded the highest number of cases today at 179, while clusters with the least number of cases are the Kg Belukar Kadok cluster in Kota Baru and Cabang Tiga Lemal cluster in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, each with eight cases. – The Vibes, August 2, 2021
