KOTA KINABALU – Vaccinated individuals are not spared from being infected with Covid-19 in Sabah, as the state recorded more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases yesterday.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who previously warned that a lockdown is no longer effective in stopping the spread of the virus, said of the new cases, 213 infections (or 18.2%) involved inoculated individuals.
The 213 cases comprise 92 fully vaccinated folk, while the rest have received only one dose, he added.
“This is due to the careless nature of communities on standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance.”
Masidi said this is the first time he reported immunised individuals contracting Covid-19.
He said infections are happening within communities and spreading among circles of acquaintances and friends, creating a multiplier effect.
Lockdowns are no longer a viable solution, he added, as the surge in infections can be dealt with only via SOP compliance and vaccination.
Masidi said 304 of the new Covid-19 cases yesterday involved those who are eligible for vaccination, while 649 involved those awaiting vaccination.
On the age range of the newly infected, he said 793 patients are between 18 and 59 years old, while 19 are infants below 1 year old, 70 are children between 1 and 5 years old, and 69 are senior citizens.
A total of 35,325 vaccine doses were administered in the state yesterday, of which 4,211 are second shots.
Overall, Sabah has immunised 1,211,957 people, of which only 392,252 (or 32%) are fully vaccinated.
A total of 27 districts logged Covid-19 cases yesterday, with 24 categorised as red zones, two as orange zones and one yellow zone. – The Vibes, August 3, 2021
